Iceland

The glaciers, volcanoes and waterfalls of the south, from a few bases with little driving

12 daysSelf-driveDates of your choicePrice coming soon

For information only, not an offer yet. Brochure not opening? Email me and I will send it to you.

I arrange this 12-day round trip in full for you, with little driving: you stay at five bases and make day trips from each one in your own 4x4. You bathe in the Blue Lagoon, drive the Golden Circle, walk in the colourful mountains of Landmannalaugar and in green Þórsmörk, and see the waterfalls and black beaches of the south coast. A super jeep takes you to the Laki craters, in Skaftafell you cross a glacier on crampons and on Jökulsárlón you sail between the icebergs.

Highlights

  • The Blue Lagoon and the rugged Reykjanes peninsula
  • The Golden Circle with time to walk at Þingvellir
  • Into the colourful mountains of Landmannalaugar with your 4x4
  • Þórsmörk by highland bus and the Seljalandsfoss and Skógafoss waterfalls
  • Dyrhólaey and the black beach of Reynisfjara
  • The moss-green Laki craters by super jeep
  • A glacier walk in Skaftafell and a zodiac between the icebergs of Jökulsárlón
  • Little driving: five bases and at most one somewhat longer drive
  • Two days in Reykjavík, with whale watching as an option

What I will arrange for you after launch

  • Pickup at the arrival airport and the transfer on your last day; the details are in the brochure.
  • All hotels and guesthouses, booked in advance at the level you choose: Budget, Comfort or Premium.
  • Transport on the ground: a rental car waiting for you (self-drive) or a private driver and private transfers. Domestic flights and trains where that makes sense.
  • The activities and entrance fees on the route. By default you travel without a guide. On the glacier you walk with a certified guide and a driver-guide takes you to Laki in a super jeep: both are included.
  • Breakfast, and the meals at remote places with no alternative (such as a safari lodge, desert camp or yurt camp). For the other meals I give you my restaurant recommendations, but you choose completely freely where you eat.
  • A personal intake, at your home or by video call.
  • A WhatsApp line, before and during your trip, and my personal 24/7 number.
  • A call-back after your trip.
  • Your international flight from Brussels: after launch I'm happy to book it for you, or you book it yourself. Prices on the site exclude the flight.

Travel whenever you like

Your dates are completely free: there are no fixed departure dates, you leave on the day that suits you. My recommended route takes 12 days. Shorter or longer is possible too; I adapt the route.

The months I recommendPossible too, let us discuss

This is advice, not a rule. If you want to travel in another month, I tell you honestly what to expect (rain, heat, crowds) and adapt the route.

Level and transport

You choose the level of your hotels and how you get around. Same route, same care; only the hotels and the transport differ.

More about self-drive and the private driver on this route

Self-drive

Iceland is made for driving yourself: quiet roads, the freedom to stop anywhere and time to walk every day. You drive a 4x4, so you may also take the highland road to Landmannalaugar, with full insurance and zero excess, also for gravel and sand and ash damage. You collect it in Keflavík on day 2 and return it at the airport on day 12. You drive little: you stay at five bases and most days you drive 2 to 3 hours at most. Fuel and parking fees are paid locally. Your roadbook gives the route per day, where to refuel and how to check the road conditions.

Private driver

On this trip you drive yourself: that is the custom in Iceland and it gives you the most freedom. Where your own car may not go, you take the highland bus (Þórsmörk) or a super jeep with a driver-guide (Laki). Would you rather not drive at all? On request I put together a trip with a private driver-guide for you.

Flight

After launch I'm happy to book your flight for you, or you book it yourself.

Flight Brussels–Keflavík not included: I am happy to book the flight for you, or you book it yourself.

Travelling responsibly

You stay in family-run guesthouses, farms and small hotels, and eat local where you can (lamb, fish, skyr). You walk every day and stay on the paths and roads, so the fragile moss and lava fields stay intact. In the highlands you leave your car where needed and take the highland bus or a local driver-guide. Iceland runs largely on geothermal and hydro power; CO₂ offsetting for your flight is possible.
