From the red dunes and Etosha to the Okavango, Chobe and Victoria Falls

18 daysSelf-drive or private driverDates of your choicefrom € 3,590 pp (estimate, not an offer)

For information only, not an offer yet. Brochure not opening? Email me and I will send it to you.

This is the route I travelled myself: 18 days from Windhoek all the way to Victoria Falls, entirely private. You drive over the Gamsberg Pass to a guest farm, hike in the Naukluft, watch the sun rise over the dunes of Sossusvlei, visit the cheetahs of the Cheetah Conservation Fund and look for elephants and rhinos from waterhole to waterhole in Etosha. Then you head for the green north: the Okavango at Rundu, the rivers and wetlands of the Caprivi, the elephants of Chobe in Botswana and finally Victoria Falls, from Zambia and from Zimbabwe.

Highlights

  • The Gamsberg Pass and a sundowner drive on a guest farm in the Khomas Hochland
  • Hiking in the Naukluft mountains and apple pie in Solitaire
  • Sunrise on Dune 45, Deadvlei and Sesriem Canyon
  • The cheetahs of the Cheetah Conservation Fund
  • A full day of game viewing across Etosha
  • The Mbunza Living Museum and sunset on the Okavango
  • Mahango, Nkasa Rupara and the rivers of the Caprivi
  • Boat cruise and game drive in Chobe, the land of the elephants
  • Victoria Falls from Zambia and from Zimbabwe

What I will arrange for you after launch

  • Pickup at the arrival airport and the transfer on your last day; the details are in the brochure.
  • All hotels and guesthouses, booked in advance at the level you choose: Budget, Comfort or Premium.
  • Transport on the ground: a rental car waiting for you (self-drive) or a private driver and private transfers. Domestic flights and trains where that makes sense.
  • The activities and entrance fees on the route. Prefer a guide? I can add a local guide to any activity.
  • Breakfast, and the meals at remote places with no alternative (such as a safari lodge, desert camp or yurt camp). For the other meals I give you my restaurant recommendations, but you choose completely freely where you eat.
  • A personal intake, at your home or by video call.
  • A WhatsApp line, before and during your trip, and my personal 24/7 number.
  • A call-back after your trip.
  • Your international flight from Brussels: after launch I'm happy to book it for you, or you book it yourself. Prices on the site exclude the flight.

More about self-drive and the private driver on this route

Self-drive

Namibia is Africa's self-drive country par excellence, and that is how I travelled this route myself. You pick up your 4x4 in Windhoek and return it in Kasane in Botswana. You get a vehicle with two spare wheels and zero-excess insurance, a thorough briefing and a road book with driving times, fuel stops and road conditions. Fuel is paid locally (indicative ± €420 per vehicle for the whole route). You drive on the left, at 80 km/h at most on gravel and never after dark. Driving days usually take 2 to 5 hours; the longest is the day over the Gaub and Kuiseb passes. The rental company gives you the border papers for Botswana.

Private driver

Rather not drive on gravel yourself? Then you travel from Windhoek to Kasane with one dedicated driver-guide in a 4x4. He speaks English and Afrikaans (which Flemish speakers understand well), knows the roads and the waterholes and also drives you through Etosha, Mahango and Nkasa Rupara. Fuel and your driver's accommodation are included.

Flight & price

After launch I'm happy to book your flight for you, or you book it yourself. The prices on this page exclude the international flight.

Flight Brussels–Windhoek, returning from Livingstone via Johannesburg, not included: allow about €1,100–1,800 p.p. depending on the month (July and August are the most expensive). I'm happy to book the flight for you, or you book it yourself.

Estimated price per person based on 2 travellers, excl. international flight; higher in high season, lower in low season. Not an offer: nothing is being sold yet.

Travelling responsibly

Namibia was the first African country to write environmental protection into its constitution. You visit the Cheetah Conservation Fund, which helps farmers and cheetahs live side by side, and the Mbunza Living Museum, run by the community itself. In the Caprivi you stay at a small camp that works with local people. In the desert you stay on the tracks and use water sparingly.
